IDI President Vamik Volkan Presents on Psychopolitical Issues in Sofia, Bulgaria

- By David Fromm

On November 20, 2014, IDI President Dr. Vamik Volkan was the guest of the Bulgarian Diplomatic Academy at the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry in Sofia, Bulgaria. He spoke about the importance of psychoanalytic political psychology in expanding the horizons of diplomatic activities. While in Sofia, Dr. Volkan also gave a well attended public lecture discussing the psychopolitical phenomenon of re-activation of certain past historical “memories,” as well as the sociopolitical consequences of such re-activation. Dr. Volkan also met with Bulgarian psychoanalysts and clinicians to examine the intertwining of external events with individual and societal psychological issues, an important issue in current Bulgarian sociopolitical discourse.
